Biography

I have been shooting professionally for twenty-five years and have worked as a free-lance photographer offering commercial and editorial photography services since 1991. I completed a Residents Program in Photography at the Maine Photographic Workshops in 1990. I studied under and assisted many world-renowned photographers, including Joyce Tenneson, John Sexton, Arnold Newman, Gregory Heisler, and Rodney Smith. Photographers who have had a profound influence on my work are Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, Ernst Haas, Steve McCurry, Ansel Adams, Galen Rowell, Jim Marshall, James Nachtwey, and Jim Brandenburg.

Prior to attending the Maine Photographic Workshops, I worked as a river photographer on the Kennebec River in Maine and as a ski photographer in Crested Butte, Colorado. From 1985 to 1997, I made thirteen trips through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River, was a trip leader on ten trips, and shot thousands of images during my time on the river. While working as a commercial guide on a Grand Canyon river trip in 1992, I met Phil Jache, who was a fellow kayaking enthusiast and the Deputy Picture Editor of Sports Illustrated Magazine. Phil and I became good friends, and in 1994 I worked my first photo transmit at the Super Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia. During my time at Sports Illustrated, I helped develop, implement and manage photo processing and transmit operations from numerous major sporting events, including nine NFL Super Bowls, eight NCAA Men’s Final Four Championships, five College Football Bowl Championship Series Championship Games, the 2000 Summer Olympic Games (Sydney, Australia), and the 2002 Winter Olympic Games (Salt Lake City, Utah).

I was a commercial photographer for many years. Current and past clients include the Biltmore Estate, Canoe/Kayak Magazine, Class VI River Runners, Dagger Kayaks, Fontana Lake Estates, John Hancock, Mad River Canoe, Mont-Bell (Japan), National Geographic Adventure Magazine, Outside Magazine, Outside Kids Magazine, Paddler Magazine, Patagonia Clothing, Perception Kayaks, Sports Illustrated Magazine, Sports Illustrated for Women Magazine, Target Stores, Merrill Lynch, the Asheville Chamber of Commerce, WNCW 88.7 FM, and UPS. I also self-published a successful line of regional panoramic landscape prints, posters, postcards, and bookmarks with retailers in four states.

I began photographing weddings in 1996 and have photographed over 425 events to date. I am a preferred vendor at the following venues: the Biltmore Estate, Claxton Farm, Crest Center and Pavilion, My Beloved Homewood, Coleman Place, Highland Lake Inn, and The Hawk and Ivy; please contact us for referrals from past clients. I am passionate about photography, enjoy making the best photos possible for my clients using film, and my lovely wife Donna has been my editor, photo assistant, and office manager since the summer of 2000. She has edited tens of thousands of photos over the years and her input and vision is invaluable to me. Donna and I are committed to making images for our clients that capture and convey the emotion of their event using the best equipment and materials available.
